Rethinking How We Make Lenses on Squidoo
I have been working with some very talented lensmasters on the Professional Squids Ning which by the way, you should all join already. The information and the teamwork is just astonishingly good, and I am not just saying this because I am involved. Anyway, back to my main topic, while I have been working with them, a very big void has made itself clear to me in how we are all taught to make lenses.
We have learned through some very excellent resources, how to make our lenses attractive, how to find keyword, how to add html, how to use the various modules, but what we are not really taught is that even with all of that, if you do not have enough original text in your lens, no one will find it.
So here I am to say it loud and clear.
The best performing content pages over time have between 500 to 1500 words of original content, around 800 is optimal in order to be able to include the keywords and phrases that you need to really start getting enough traffic to make money.
All the pictures in the world will not do the job, and if you can't get the traffic, it will not matter how pretty your lens is or how many selling modules you have.
Now, do all of my lenses meet this requirement? No they don't, because I didn't learn this until recently. But I will be slowly changing that.
So before you spend a lot of time prettying up your lenses, make sure that they have the basics for SEO, keywords in your title, introduction, subtitles and throughout the text, and at least 500 words of original content. That means that you have to write it. And this does not included your bio, or wikipedia. You have to create it yourself.

Paula I could not agree more :)
Paula,
I'm wondering HOW you came to this conclusion. I mean, it sounds logical, but how did you figure this out?
Very good question, Jimmie, and I hate to say it but I learned it on Hubpages where there are far less options to make a hub look pretty so people get down to the nitty gritty right away.
I love Squidoo, but I think that we have gotten too far away from the basics, and need to focus on getting our lenses seen. This is even more important in the more competitive niches. If the page is written properly, a lensmaster will not have to do nearly as much backlinking to get a page noticed.
You've given me something to really examine as I update my lenses every day. Thanks.
Thanks for that answer, Paula.
Content is the most important thing that we can offer readers on our pages. I think that sometimes we need to be reminded of that. :)
